Broadcast Journalism

Although we do not have any outlets for broadcast journalism at our school, I have some experience with the field, like by guest starring in Walsworth Publishing's national podcasts that are available on the App Store, Yearbook Chat with Jim and Ask Mike. Additionally, I have created several commercials to as Class Council President to promote our prom, and I created a documentary that is published in the Library of Congress.

Prom Preview

Last year, a student-led prom took over the school-led prom over the debate over masking. This year, it was my goal as Class Council President for our club to throw the best prom ELCO had ever seen. To advertise for our prom, I created the Prom Preview series. I asked some of my friends and club members that had prom outfits from last year if they would participate. The event staff at our venue was kind enough to let us use our venue to shoot promo photos and videos to use as advertisements and for our social media account, @elcoclassof2022. I recorded all of the videos and created the commercials while my dad, yearbook and Class Council adviser, took the photos. As an E! News red carpet special junkie, I strived to have the prom preview series capture the essence of what our prom will be: the hottest, most-talked-about event of the year. Watch the videos below!

Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress

After conducting a lengthy interview my freshman year with my grandpa, a WWII veteran, for the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress and creating a documentary about it, I felt prepared and confident in my abilities as a journalist to effectively communicate the truth and to tell a story to any audience. That held true when my grandpa, at 97 years young, passed away later that year, and as he loved my documentary so much, he had it shown in the middle of his funeral service. Crying in the church, a bittersweet realization hit me: although my grandpa was gone, he loved my storytelling and journalistic abilities so much that it was his dying wish to share my work at his funeral. It hit me deeply that I had the power through my writing abilities to touch someone’s life that much and to share their truth.
